Back in the early 90’s, the Unity Foundation was initially created in direct response to the crack cocaine epidemic that had plagued inner city streets. During the same period of time was also the rise of Hip Hop. Back then every kid wanted to be the next big Emcee. Building upon that desire, Unity created a very unique program which provided the resources and outlet to foster the development of the skill of rapping for our youth. With so many youths positively responding, we were able to showcase their talent during our “SAY NO TO DRUGS’ campaigns concerts, participants from these events got the experience of having their music heard on many of the local radio stations, and in doing so, we were able to provide an outlet for free expression. They were able to voice and put rhythm to their challenges, living conditions and over all frustrations. Put simply, they felt heard.
The question of "Why" is a question that I have asked myself a lot as of late. And the simple answer would be now is the time. Today our children are crying for help in ways which we have never seen before, in an environment where hope seems to be fading fast. Our children need innovative ideas, creative programming, and a hands-on approach to deal with the on slough of issues that plaque our youth today such as poverty, mental health issues, cyber bullying, food insecurity and mass incarceration. While these are what some would call problems, we at The Unity Foundation see as challenges that can be overcome. With the collaborative efforts of various grass roots organizations in conjunction with both state and local elected officials, it is our belief; with this collaborative approach, together, we can again, make a positive change.
